Max Drawdown Rules Explained: The Math That Fails Most Traders

Drawdown rules kill more funded accounts than bad strategies do, because traders read the percentage and never compute the dollar line. Here are the rule types and the arithmetic behind each one.

Total drawdown: static vs trailing

Static drawdown is fixed from the starting balance: on $100,000 with 10% max drawdown, the floor is $90,000 for the entire life of the account, whether you are up $2,000 or $20,000. Trailing drawdown moves with your equity or high-water mark: at a $112,000 peak, your 10% floor trails up to $102,200 (depending on whether the firm trails to the target or indefinitely), which means a profitable account can still be one bad session from breach. Static floors favor steady compounding; trailing floors favor early, frequent payouts.

Daily loss limits

Daily drawdown is measured from your day-start equity or balance, resets every firm-defined day (often midnight server time, 5pm New York), and is usually smaller than the total limit: 5% daily against 10% total is common. The daily limit is what actually ends accounts, because two or three oversized losing trades can consume it in a single session. Check your exact remaining room with the daily loss limit calculator.

Worked example: the trailing trap

You pass phase two and get $100,000 with 10% trailing drawdown. You run it to $118,000; your floor is now $108,000. A news spike takes $9,500 in a day: you are at $108,500, still up $8,500 lifetime, but only $500 from breach. Traders in this exact position, up money and nearly dead, is the classic funded account failure mode, and it is entirely predictable arithmetic. Compute your current floor any time equity makes a new high with the max drawdown calculator.

The two habits that keep accounts alive

First: convert every rule to dollars on day one and re-check the trailing floor whenever you make a new equity high. Second: set your personal daily stop at 40-60% of the firm limit. Passing evaluations is mostly about not losing fast; the position size calculator keeps each trade’s contribution to the limits small and predictable.
